Down 49 cents in January, when the bowl was renamed the Mashed Potato Bowl, rebuilt on crispy nuggets and folded into the $5 line. The two-decade "Famous Bowl" name survives in the combo title and in everyday speech, which is why this ledger carries both names; sites still quoting $5.99 are describing the 2025 bowl.
Fact checkWhy other sites disagree about this item
Search this bowl and you will find two products described as one: the 2025 Famous Bowl (popcorn chicken, $5.49 to $5.99) and the 2026 Mashed Potato Bowl (crispy nuggets, $5.00). They are the same slot on the board. KFC renamed the bowl in January, moved the chicken layer to nuggets and priced it into the $5 line; the ordering app and the combo listing still say "Famous Bowl", so both names are correct and the price is the tell. A listing at $5.99 with popcorn chicken is a year old.
The calorie line stays where the classic sat: the nugget portion lands within a rounding of the popcorn layer it replaced, and the mash, gravy, corn and cheese are unchanged, so 590 remains the number to plan around. Fat figures on other pages range from 23 g to 35 g for a fixed-recipe product; numbers that drift like that were transcribed, not weighed.

One serving, one day’s sodium
2,440 mg is 106% of the full daily value in one bowl. It lives in the gravy and the nugget seasoning, so no customization gets it anywhere near moderate: dropping the cheese saves about 180 mg, a rounding error. If sodium is your constraint, order a different item, not a modified bowl; the Mac & Cheese Bowl at the same $5 runs a quarter lighter.

What is in a Famous Bowl?
One bowl, built bottom-up in a fixed order: mashed potatoes, a ladle of brown gravy, a layer of sweet corn, a portion of crispy chicken nuggets, and a three-cheese blend melted across the top. It eats like a plate dinner with a fork, which is the entire pitch: KFC’s whole flavor profile in one container, at a price that now starts with a five.
The bowl joined the permanent menu in 2006 as the Famous Bowl and has outlived every attempt to replace it. In January 2026 KFC renamed it the Mashed Potato Bowl, moved the chicken layer from popcorn chicken to the hand-breaded nuggets, and priced it at $5.00 flat alongside the Mac & Cheese Bowl. The name on the counter board changed; the order did not. Ask for a Famous Bowl anywhere in the country and this is what arrives.
Portion-wise it is a genuine single meal. Most adults will not want a side with it, and pairing it with one turns a five-dollar order into two meals’ worth of food.
One practical note on the corn: it is the divisive layer, and the kitchen knows it. “No corn” is the single most common modification on this item, it costs nothing, and the gravy is better for it.
Famous Bowl vs Mashed Potato Bowl: what actually changed
Three things, and only three. The name, which now reads Mashed Potato Bowl on kfc.com and the in-store board while the combo is still titled the Famous Bowl Combo. The chicken layer, which is now the same crispy nuggets sold in the 8 pc. and 12 pc. boxes, milder and more breading-forward than the seasoned popcorn bite the classic was known for. And the price, down from $5.99 to $5.00, the only headline item on the 2026 board to get cheaper. Mash, gravy, corn and cheese are untouched, and the calorie line holds at 590 because the nugget portion lands within a rounding of what it replaced.
If you miss the popcorn chicken, it is back on the menu as its own line: the Popcorn Chicken box, the combo and a $10 bucket. Nothing stops you ordering a popcorn box alongside the bowl; the kitchen will not build the old bowl for you.
How it is made
Everything in the bowl already exists elsewhere on the menu, so the potatoes, corn and gravy come off the sides line and the nuggets out of the fryer, and it is assembled to order in under a minute. That is why it travels better than anything else KFC sells: nothing in it goes structurally wrong in transit the way a sandwich bun or a fried coating does.
Every layer is customizable at no charge: no corn, no cheese, extra gravy, cheese on the side. None of the swaps change the price. The Nashville Hot version is the same construction with the nuggets tossed in spiced oil, and it sells à la carte at the same $5 as the Nashville Hot Mashed Potato Bowl or with a drink as the Nashville Hot Famous Bowl Combo.
Reheating is where this item quietly beats the rest of the menu: ninety seconds covered in the microwave restores it to about ninety percent of fresh, which no fried-coating item can claim. That is why it is the standing recommendation for delivery orders over twenty minutes out.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Right for anyone eating one-handed at a desk, feeding a teenager without committing to a meal deal, or stretching a five-dollar budget into an actual dinner. It reheats cleanly, which makes it the best next-day order on the menu too.
Skip it in two cases. If sodium is the number you watch, look at the meter above: no modification rescues this bowl, and the Pot Pie runs a quarter lighter on salt for a dollar and a half more. And if you came for crunch: this is soft, mild comfort food by design, and the 3 pc. Tenders Combo is the better order at $8.69.
Is it worth the price?
Worth it: at $5 flat, only the $4.99 Taste of KFC plate feeds you for less.
The January reprice moved this bowl from good value to the value anchor of the whole board. The Classic Chicken Sandwich Combo runs $3.69 more, the tenders combo the same; the big combos win on raw calories per cent only because they carry a drink and fries. Inside the $5 line the choice is the base: this bowl for the classic mash-and-gravy formula at 590 calories, the Mac & Cheese Bowl for the lighter, cheese-forward version at 540, the Nashville Hot version for the same money with heat. The Loaded Smash'd Potato Bowl at $5.49 is the newer, heavier cousin: 950 calories of cheesy smashed potato, fries and bacon under the same nuggets.
One caution stands: skip the combo upgrade unless you actually want the drink. The $1.99 is fair against the $2.99 à la carte price, but the bowl alone is already a complete meal.
Order hacks
- Order it by either name. “Famous Bowl” still works at every counter and in the app, and it rings up at the $5 Mashed Potato Bowl price.
- Ask for “no corn, extra gravy”: free, fewer carbs, and it fixes the bowl’s one structural flaw.
- Skip the combo unless a drink was already in the plan; the $1.99 upgrade is fair against a $2.99 à la carte drink, but the bowl alone is a complete 590-calorie meal.
- Pick a zero-sugar drink if you take the combo and the whole order stays at 590 calories instead of 800.
- Get the cheese on the side for delivery; it re-melts in the microwave far better than it survives the drive.
- Want heat? The Nashville Hot version is the same $5 à la carte: the nuggets tossed in spiced oil, about 90 more calories.

KFC Mashed Potato Bowl (Famous Bowl) FAQs
Is the KFC Famous Bowl still on the menu?
Yes, under a new name. Since January 2026 it sells as the Mashed Potato Bowl at $5.00, with crispy chicken nuggets in place of the old popcorn chicken layer. The combo listing still carries the Famous Bowl name.
How many calories are in a KFC Famous Bowl?
590 calories for the standard bowl, with 26 g protein, 65 g carbohydrates and 26 g fat. The Nashville Hot version adds roughly 90 calories.
How much does the Famous Bowl cost in 2026?
$5.00 à la carte as the national reference price, $6.99 as a combo with a medium drink. Franchises set their own prices, and AK, HI and CA run higher.
Why do some websites say the Famous Bowl costs $5.99?
That was the 2025 price of the popcorn-chicken build. The January 2026 rename to Mashed Potato Bowl brought a $5 price and a nugget build, and many listings never caught up.
What is the difference between the Famous Bowl and the Mashed Potato Bowl?
Nothing on the current menu: they are one product. The Mashed Potato Bowl is the Famous Bowl's official name since January, with nuggets as the chicken layer.
Is the Famous Bowl combo worth the extra money?
Only if you want the drink. $6.99 buys the bowl plus a medium drink, a $1.99 upgrade against the $2.99 à la carte drink, but the bowl alone is already a complete meal.
How much sodium is in a Famous Bowl?
2,440 mg, which is 106% of the 2,300 mg daily value in a single item. Most of it is in the gravy and the nugget seasoning, so no customization reduces it meaningfully.
Does the Famous Bowl contain gluten?
Yes. The nugget breading and the gravy both contain wheat, and fryers are shared, so there is no gluten-free configuration of this item.
Is the Famous Bowl vegetarian without the chicken?
No. The gravy is made with chicken drippings, so a meat-free bowl needs both removed, at which point the sides menu serves you better.
What is the Nashville Hot Famous Bowl?
The same five-layer build with the nuggets tossed in Nashville Hot spiced oil. It sells à la carte at the same $5 and as a $6.99 combo, with about 90 more calories and real heat.
How big is a Famous Bowl?
About 19 ounces, roughly 540 grams. It eats like a full dinner plate for most adults; adding a side turns it into two meals' worth of food.
Does the Famous Bowl reheat well?
Best on the menu. Ninety seconds covered in the microwave restores it almost completely, because nothing in it depends on staying crisp. Ask for cheese on the side if reheating is the plan.
