KFC $20 Build-A-Bucket: Price & What’s In It
The $20 Build-A-Bucket is KFC's flat-price family anchor: eight dark-meat pieces or eight Original Recipe chicken tenders, four individual sides, four dipping sauces and four biscuits for $20.00, about $5 a head across four people and roughly 2,640 to 3,240 calories across the bucket on the dark-meat build. It is the cheapest complete family meal for four on the board, beaten per head only by the 16-tender meal split eight ways, and the only bucket that lets the table pick its protein.

Fact checkWhy other sites disagree about this item
Listings for this bucket routinely add breasts, drop the sauces or print it at $22.99 by confusing it with a store's own 8-piece bucket. The listed build is eight dark-meat pieces or eight Original Recipe tenders, four sides, four sauces and four biscuits at $20. The calorie range here is computed piece by piece for the dark-meat build with mash and biscuits; the tender build lands a little under it.

What is in a $20 Build-A-Bucket?
Four decisions and a bucket. The protein is either eight pieces of dark-meat bone-in chicken, drums and thighs, or eight Original Recipe tenders; the sides are four individual portions chosen from the standing line, mash and gravy, slaw, corn, mac, fries; four dipping sauces from the rack; and four biscuits. The price is in the name, which means it is set nationally and does not drift by a dollar between stores the way the 8 pc. meal does.
Dark meat is the catch and the point: no breasts, no wings, which is how KFC gets eight pieces under twenty dollars. For most tables that is the preferred half of the bucket anyway.
How it is made
Dark pieces from the batch cycle or tenders from the drawer, four individual sides under their own lids rather than two larges, sauces and biscuits bagged. The individual-side format is the quiet difference from the family meals: four people each get their own choice rather than the table sharing two larges, which ends the mash-versus-slaw negotiation before it starts.
Recipe choice on the chicken is Original Recipe by default; Extra Crispy dark pieces on request where the store has them in the cycle.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Families of four on a budget, which is the design brief; tender-only households, who finally have a bucket-price tender meal; anyone who was buying two Taste of KFC boxes and adding sides. Skip it if the table wants breasts, the 8 pc. meal at $29.99 is the mixed bucket, or if four individual sides feel smaller than two larges for your crowd, because they are: four individuals add up to roughly one large side’s worth of food, not two.
Is it worth the price?
Five dollars a head for chicken, a side, a sauce and a biscuit. Nothing else on the family board comes close.
The 8 pc. Chicken Meal is $29.99 for mixed pieces, two large sides and four biscuits, $7.50 a head; the Fan Favorite's Box is $25 for four pieces, twelve nuggets, fries and biscuits, $6.25 a head; the 8 pc. Tenders Meal is $19.99 with two large sides and four biscuits, the same money as this bucket’s tender build with larger sides but no sauces. Build-A-Bucket wins on price per head against all of them and loses only on breast meat and side volume. Per head it computes at about 660 to 810 calories on the dark build, a real dinner rather than a snack.
Order hacks
- Pick the tender build for kids’ tables and the dark-meat build for adults; you cannot mix inside one bucket, so two buckets is the eight-person answer at $40.
- Four individual sides means four choices. Two mash, one slaw, one mac covers most tables; all four mash is the cold-weather order.
- Sauces are included, four of them. Mix KFC Sauce, Honey BBQ and Classic Ranch rather than four of one.
- It is the same per-head price as the $10 Taste of KFC meal with sauces and a side choice added; for two people take the Taste box, for four take this.
- Ask for Extra Crispy on the dark pieces if the store has them in the cycle; thighs carry that breading best.
