The gravy trap

The mashed potatoes are vegetarian; the gravy on them is not. KFC gravy is made from crackling, the drippings and breading collected from the chicken fryers, whisked into a seasoned stock base, so mashed potatoes with gravy, the Mashed Potato Bowl, the poppers and the gravy dip cup are all off the list. Every restaurant serves the mash plain at the same price ($2.79), and ordering it that way also drops 200 mg of sodium. The gravy page has the full story.

The shared fryer

Fries, wedges and fried pickles share fryer oil with chicken at most restaurants, which moves them from vegan ingredients to vegan ingredients with an asterisk. Where the line is drawn is a personal decision; this page’s job is to show where the asterisk sits. Strict avoidance eats from the lanes that never touch a fryer: corn, green beans, plain mash (vegetarian), the packaged sweets, the sauce cups and the drinks. Sauce cups are $0.59 each; the honey and the hot sauce come as packets on request. Whether honey fits a vegan line is a personal call.

Two plates, priced

A large side costs more than the individual portions priced here and feeds three or four. Drinks are on the drinks board, all vegan on the ingredient list.

How to order meat-free at KFC

1. Say “plain” for the mashed potatoes. The gravy is ladled on by default; plain mash is the same price.
2. Order sides à la carte or as a large. A large side feeds three or four; individual portions are $2.79 to $3.89.
3. Skip the bowls and the poppers. Every bowl carries chicken and gravy; the Mashed Potato Poppers come with a gravy dip.
4. Ask about the fryer if it matters. Restaurants can say whether fries share oil with chicken; most do.
5. Use the app to build the order. Sides, sweets and drinks can be ordered without a main, and the order earns Rewards points.

Beyond Fried Chicken and the plant-based question

KFC and Beyond Meat launched Beyond Fried Chicken nationwide on 10 January 2022 for a limited time after two years of tests, per KFC’s release. It has not returned to the national menu, and listings that still recommend it are out of date. No plant-based main is on the US board on the review date; this page changes the day one is announced.
